Not everyone feels like they can just show up at a Boudoir Session and rock the set.  There can be a LOT of hesitation feeling comfortable stripping down in front of a camera, with a stranger no less, all up in your business.  The good news is, you don’t have to be a supermodel to have amazing boudoir portraits!

don’t sweat it.

Literally.  Your photographer’s job is to make sure you feel comfortable and help you find your most flattering angles and looks.  I personally take quite a bit more time to edit boudoir photos than a normal portrait session.  Many other photographers do the same – and it’s not to be misleading or “fake” with the body you have, but to accentuate the things you love and making sure things like stretch marks, veins, and tan lines aren’t going to take away from your natural beauty.

what do i wear?

There isn’t exactly a right or wrong answer for this.  You want to show off your body for your boyfriend/fiance/husband/partner but you also want to be comfortable!  Anything such as a matching bra and panty set, a white button down, camisole, or a full on lingerie get up will surely do the trick!  You can even keep it casual and do just a tank and boyshorts.  If there’s a certain thing you wear that you know get’s your partner’s engines revving, than go on girl!  Work it.

And for the brides: definitely bring your veil, garter, and any of your wedding day jewelry.   He is going to want to remember what you looked like on your wedding night!

what if i’m super nervous?

That’s fine.  The best thing to do is take the time to talk to your photographer before the session.  Meet for coffee or have a phone Q&A session to bring up any and all things that concern you for the session.  You’ll be surprised at how a good photographer will make you feel at ease.  Sometimes, I play music during sessions which encourages my ladies to smile more, laugh, dance, and just let loose! (Beyonce has a way of bringing out your “Yaaas Work Betch” attitude!)

but i don’t know anything about modeling…

That’s alright too!  The point isn’t to come off as super posed or “pornstar-y”… it’s to literally just be yourself.  If you’re that worried, Pinterest has an awesome collection of boudoir examples for you to prep yourself with!  Share example photos with your photographer too, and that will help give and idea on the exact look you want!

what other tips and tricks should i know?

A lot of photographers offer hair and makeup in their sessions, but if not – hair looks great when it’s wave and tousled (think the “sex hair” look), and a dark smokey eye is the way to go.  Make sure your nail polish is either freshly manicured or no polish at all.  Chipped fingernails look super distracting and are difficult to edit.  Stay away from spray tans and changing up your skin routine to prevent any adverse effects to new products.

wrapping up…

Boudoir  is a great way to feel sexy and confident, and its an AMAZING gift for your hubby.  Talk with your local photographer to make sure you guys area good fit, and be open with communication if you’re nervous.
